Where Argostoli is

Argostoli is Kefalonia's capital, on the Gulf of Argostoli in the south-west of the island. About 11,000 people lived in the town at the 2021 census. This page covers the town and the villages around it, including Farsa, Faraklata, Davgata, Dilinata, Troianata, Nyfi, Razata, Zola and Agonas, and the figures above count all of them.

Services all year

This is the part of the island where everything stays open twelve months a year: the general hospital, schools, supermarkets, banks and public services. It is also where most of the paperwork happens. Kefalonia's branch of the Hellenic Cadastre has operated in Argostoli since November 2023, and the municipality's building service is here too.

Lassi, the coastal suburb just outside town, has the sandy beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos about 3 km from the centre, and the airport is about 8 km to the south. A ferry crosses the gulf to Lixouri on the Paliki peninsula in about 20–25 minutes, twice an hour in summer and once an hour in winter.

Town, nearby villages, or further out

Inside Argostoli, plots fall within the town plan, so coverage, height and use are set by the plan for that block. In the villages, a plot is either inside the settlement limits or outside the plan, and the rules differ. Ask your engineer which applies before you compare prices.

Farsa sits on the shore of the gulf, a short drive from town. Zola and Agonas are further out, about 20 km north-west, on the far side of the gulf facing Paliki. They are quieter, with a longer drive to the services in town.

What to check on a plot near Argostoli

Building terms. For a plot within the town plan, ask the engineer for the building terms that apply to that block, not just the plot area. Two plots of the same size can allow very different buildings.

The Koutavos lagoon. East of the town, below the Castle of St George, the Koutavos lagoon is a protected nature reserve and a feeding ground for loggerhead sea turtles. On a plot near it, confirm with your engineer whether any protected-area rules apply before you pay a deposit.
