Agios Dimitrios: the "Brahami" that grew up around a church
Locals still call it "Brahami" or "Brahames". The settlement grew in the interwar years around the church of Agios Dimitrios. It became a community in 1925, took its present name in 1928 and became a municipality in 1963. Where the old name comes from is not certain, most likely from someone called "Ibrahim".
Today it is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Athens: 71,664 residents in less than 5 km² (2021). It has had a metro station since 2004, an architectural gem in Zenetos's "Round" school, and the Katsimichas brothers grew up here. Its neighbours are Ilioupoli and, further down Vouliagmenis Avenue, Argyroupoli.
The heart of going out is the church of Agios Dimitrios (Leof. Agiou Dimitriou 117) and the side streets around it, Akrita and Iroon. The metro is about 900 m to the east, and every place in this guide is within 1.3 km. This guide is part of the series Where to live in Athens.
Night bars
Paragon Brewery & Taproom
Lemesou 3, on the border with Ilioupoli, a few steps from the metro
A brewery with a taproom: you drink the beer next to the tanks where it is made, behind a glass wall with iron arches. It is housed in a former 320 m² ironworks and has been open since December 2021. Besides its own beers (Riviera, Falifornia, Arriktos) it has guest labels that change all the time. You order at the bar and can taste before you choose.
- MUST-TRY: Falifornia (APA)
- VIBE: industrial taproom, relaxed
- HEADS-UP: it has no kitchen of its own
- HOURS: Tuesday–Saturday 18:00–01:30 · Sunday 18:00–00:30 · closed Monday
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.8/5 (Google, 10/2026)
SKNIPA Local Beer Bar
Karamababa 57
A small neighbourhood beer bar, with a good choice of Greek and imported labels. Its strong point is Czech beers, with a barman who knows them by heart. Artistic decor, rock music, and the bill often comes with a complimentary dessert and raki. For beer and conversation, with no concept at all.

- VIBE: industrial live venue
- HEADS-UP: without live music the experience depends a lot on the night
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.4/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Meze places and small tavernas
Remoutsiko
Leof. Agiou Dimitriou 120, opposite the church
The local institution for more than 30 years, in a renovated farmhouse from the early 20th century. In summer you eat in the courtyard and in winter next to two fireplaces. The kontosouvli (spit-roasted pork) is the best seller, but the lamb chops, the liver and the fresh fried potatoes are also worth it. At the end, complimentary semolina halva often arrives. It easily takes large groups.

Green space, sport and history
Zenetos's "Round" school
Papagou 23 & Kallitheas
A circular three-storey school with large cantilevers and sunshades, designed by Takis Zenetos in the early 1970s. It even has its own documentary, "The building that fell to earth", and in summer the schoolyard hosts film festivals. It is a working school, so you admire it from outside.
Asyrmatou Park
Asyrmatou, about 1.1 km
The largest green space in the area, about 78 stremmata (7.8 hectares). Residents campaigned for it from the 1980s and planted about 300 trees themselves. It has a playground and a dog park, and in summer there are events. To be honest, though: in some places it looks neglected, and at night it is dark. Since 2021 there has been an amendment to the town plan to turn it into a space for greenery, culture and sport, so it is worth keeping an eye on.
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.1/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Traffic Education Park and Pikrodafni Stream
Messinias 21, at the end of Asyrmatou
A paradise for children on bikes, next to a cycle path. A little further down, the Pikrodafni stream runs from Mount Hymettus towards the sea, with pines, oaks, poplars and migratory birds.
