The first question before you buy or rent a home in Athens is not "how many square metres" but "which neighbourhood". In every guide in this series we walk a neighbourhood with the same approach: its history in two paragraphs, the bars and meze places worth your time, coffee, green space and sport, and the practical side (metro, buses, street market). Every place in each guide is within roughly one kilometre of a central point.

Southern suburbs

Glyfada

The "Riviera of Athens": Esperidon Square, cocktails on Laodikis, tavernas on Lazaraki, marinas, the oldest golf course in Greece and the Poets' Walk down to the sea. No metro station, but served by the tram. → Glyfada: neighbourhood guide

Palaio Faliro

The first port of Athens, with a Constantinopolitan flavour from the Greeks of Istanbul who settled here. The corner of Agiou Alexandrou and Naiadon, Flisvos Park, the battleship "Averof" and the seafront. → Palaio Faliro: neighbourhood guide

Argyroupoli

A Pontic Greek neighbourhood founded in 1926 at the foot of Mount Hymettus, with the metro (Line 2) and Ellinikon being built next door. Life gathers on Marinou Geroulanou. → Argyroupoli: neighbourhood guide

Ilioupoli

A 100-year-old neighbourhood below Mount Hymettus. A Central Square that stays lively past midnight, old kafeneia and meze places, Kinti Grove and the metro (Line 2). → Ilioupoli: neighbourhood guide

Agios Dimitrios

"Brahami": one of the most densely populated municipalities in Athens, with the metro since 2004, Zenetos's "Round" school and Asyrmatos Park. The side streets around the church are the starting point. → Agios Dimitrios: neighbourhood guide

Centre and north

Ano Patisia

The old countryside retreat of Athens, with the Line 1 metro (Ilektrikos) on its doorstep, FIX Park, the open-air cinema AB and an evening scene around Gavriilidou. → Ano Patisia: neighbourhood guide

How the guides are written

  • Places are chosen from Athens press coverage and public reviews. Where a "public rating" is given, it is the average of public Google reviews at the time of writing (October 2026), not our own rating.
  • Opening hours and prices change. Before you go, a phone call saves you a wasted trip.
  • The sources for each guide are listed at the end of it.
