Glyfada: from brackish wells to the Riviera of Athens
The town owes its name to its wells of brackish, "glyfo" water. In antiquity this was the deme of Aixone, famous for its red mullet. Until 1830 the land was two large estates. From 1924 it was divided into plots, and that is how neighbourhoods such as the "Dikigorika" were born.
The American base at Ellinikon (1947–1993) gave Glyfada the "American" character it still has. Today the municipality has 89,597 residents (2021), twice as many as in 1981. To the north is Argyroupoli, and further up the coast road is Palaio Faliro.
The heart of the nightlife is Esperidon Square and the Metaxa–Lambraki axis down to the 1st Marina: cocktails on Laodikis, tavernas on Lazaraki, coffee on Kyprou. Every place in this guide is within roughly one kilometre of the square, except the golf course. This guide is part of the series Where to live in Athens.
Night bars
Mosaiko
Laodikis 30, right on Esperidon Square
A small, stylish bar that opens in the morning for coffee and closes late at night. The cocktails have personality, and the bartenders will make you something off the menu if you tell them what you like. In the evenings there are often DJ sets, and your drink can come with pizza. For anyone who wants a proper cocktail without going to a club.
- MUST-TRY: Paloma or Zombie
- VIBE: cool cocktail spot with a DJ
- HOURS: 09:30–02:30 (Friday until 03:30, Saturday until 04:00)
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.5/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Holy Spirit
Laodikis 41
One of the liveliest drinks spots in the neighbourhood, in a space you won't forget: a Mini Cooper hangs from the wall and toy trains run over your head. The "Mega cocktails" are its signature, with ice that doesn't melt in five minutes. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and a buzz on the pavement.
- MUST-TRY: one of the Mega cocktails
- VIBE: playful street bar for groups
- HEADS-UP: it is often full, so you may wait for a table
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.4/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Topan
Savva Lazaridi 2
The hidden spot for after dinner, the place "where everybody knows your name". Signature cocktails with fresh juices, well-made classics (Negroni, Mojito), spirits and wines. There is a jukebox too, so you choose the music. Prices are fair for Glyfada.
- MUST-TRY: Pornstar Martini (passion fruit and vanilla)
- VIBE: late-night, local, with a jukebox
- HEADS-UP: it only opens from 22:00
- HOURS: daily 22:00–04:00

Brewklyn
Giannitsopoulou 3
The exception to the "Glyfada = cocktails" pattern. A small, warm bar with Greek and international craft beers, each in its own glass. The staff know what they are serving and recommend according to your taste. The music is groovy, at a volume that lets you talk.
- MUST-TRY: a pale ale from a small Greek brewery; ask what they have on tap
- VIBE: cosy beer bar
- HEADS-UP: the only food is pizza (good pizza, though)
- HOURS: 18:00–01:00 (Friday–Saturday until 01:30)
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.8/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Meze places / tavernas / fish

A modern meze place right on Metaxa, ideal for people watching with a glass of wine. The prawns in tomato sauce and the prawn giouvetsi (baked orzo) are the safe bets. There are souvlaki platters for two and a wide range of ouzo and tsipouro. Open from midday every day, so it also works after shopping.

George's Steak House – Biftekoupoli
Konstantinoupoleos 4–6
An institution of old Glyfada, a family business for about 70 years. Its signature is grilled burger patties with chips and salad, and it is so big that you will almost always find a table. Many people go out of nostalgia. Our advice: stick to the basics.
- MUST-TRY: burger patties with chips
- VIBE: old-school, noisy Glyfada
- HEADS-UP: when it fills up service is slow, the expensive cuts are not its strong point and the décor needs a refresh
- HOURS: daily 12:00–00:30
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.2/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Coffee and something sweet
Oh Mama
Kyprou 48

- PUBLIC RATING: 4.3/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Routina
Dousmani 8
An elegant café and patisserie just before the sea, for the sweet stop on your walk. The kok (Greek cream-filled sponge) is the reason to go, but the tiramisu and the Greek coffee are worth it too. There are sugar-free sweets as well.
- MUST-TRY: kok
- VIBE: elegant, quiet
- HEADS-UP: the espresso is dark and bitter. If you don't like it that way, order a Greek coffee

- PUBLIC RATING: 4.9/5 (Google, 10/2026)
Papaparaskevas
Andrea Papandreou 13
A tradition from Thrace: the workshop started in 1926 in Xanthi and the Glyfada shop opened in 2013. Mandolato nougat, kourabiedes (butter shortbread), kariokakia (chocolate-nut bites) and syrup pastries that remind you of your grandmother. If you are visiting someone, this is where you pick up the box.
- MUST-TRY: saragli (rolled syrup pastry)
- VIBE: classic patisserie
- HEADS-UP: a little more expensive than average
- HOURS: daily 08:30–21:30

Sea, green space and sport
The Poets' Walk
Gr. Lambraki, from the centre to the beach
A pedestrian and cycle path on the old central strip of Lambraki, with lines by Greek poets carved into the paving and the benches. The nicest route from the square to the sea, in the afternoon or early in the morning for a light run.
Marinas and beaches
Kato Glyfada, about 600 m from the square
Kato Glyfada has 4 marinas, where big yachts moor next to wooden caiques. The Glyfada Nautical Club is one of the oldest in the country. Next to the 1st Marina there is a small sandy beach for a quick swim. For an organised beach, Asteras Glyfadas (Poseidonos 58) has been open since 1959.
Glyfada Golf
About 2 km from the centre
The oldest golf course in Greece, since 1966: 18 holes, par 72, on about 530 stremmata (around 53 hectares) inside the pine forest. It also has practice areas, 2 tennis courts and a restaurant. Even for people who don't play golf, it is one of the biggest green lungs of the southern suburbs.
Arian open-air cinema
Ang. Metaxa 11
A summer cinema in the heart of Glyfada, with greenery, a snack bar and sofa-style seats. On very hot nights the air barely moves, and smoking is not banned.
- WHEN: summer only
- PRICE: around €10 a ticket
- PUBLIC RATING: 4.6/5 (Google, 10/2026)
For the sporty: ANO Glyfada (1946) are water polo champions, and G.S. Glyfada has national titles in athletics. The coast road and the Poets' Walk are the daily route for the area's runners.

Note: Glyfada is changing. A pedestrian bridge, the "Esplanade", is planned over Poseidonos, along with a new 7-stremma (0.7-hectare) square in front of the Town Hall with an underground car park of about 700 spaces. The timetable depends on the works on Poseidonos.
Transport:
- Tram: runs along Gr. Lambraki, with stops from Katraki Square to the Swimming Pool (Kolymvitirio). Service is affected by the works on Poseidonos, so check the timetable before you set off.
- Metro: there is no station in Glyfada. The nearest is Elliniko (Line 2), and from there you continue by bus or taxi.
- Buses: routes from Elliniko and towards the centre along Vouliagmenis and the coast road. Timetables at oasa.gr.
- Street market (laiki): every Thursday.
