Argyroupoli: the Pontic Greek neighbourhood at the foot of Hymettus

Argyroupoli was founded in 1926 by refugees from Argyroupoli in Pontus, on what was then the "Geroulanos Estate". Their first project was the church of Agia Varvara, patron saint of their old homeland. Development came slowly: electricity only in 1945, a water network in 1957, and the big building boom started in the 1970s.

Why is it worth it today? Wide streets, low-rise houses, Mount Hymettus behind and the sea about 5 minutes away by car. Next door, Ellinikon is being built, with a Metropolitan Park of 2,000 stremmata (200 hectares). Today Argyroupoli has 33,312 residents (2021). Its neighbours are Ilioupoli and Glyfada.

The heart of the nightlife is Iroon Polytechneiou Square (Agia Triada) and Marinou Geroulanou, about 550 m from the metro. Almost every place in this guide is on the same street or one side street away. This guide is part of the series Where to live in Athens.

Night bars

Barallou

Mar. Geroulanou 115 & El. Venizelou

The first alternative bar in Argyroupoli, and still going strong. Coffee in the morning, beers and cocktails in the evening. Low light, jazz, rock and blues or a DJ, in a mood that feels more like a street lounge than a suburb. Ideal for a drink and a conversation.

  • MUST-TRY: a beer from the long list, or a cocktail
  • VIBE: low-lit lounge with jazz-rock
  • HEADS-UP: the wide beer selection is its big strength; the food is not
  • HOURS: daily 09:00–03:30 (Friday–Saturday until 04:30)
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.5/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Maradona

Mar. Geroulanou 74

The newest arrival on Geroulanou, since January 2025. Industrial pop: a marble bar, neon, and a theme taken straight from the street football of our childhood. It has 10 signature cocktails, half of them low in alcohol, and a list of Greek wines. On salsa and rumba nights the whole place is on its feet. The food holds up too: a charcuterie board, beef in tomato sauce.

  • MUST-TRY: a low-ABV signature cocktail
  • VIBE: lively all-day spot in the mood for dancing
  • HEADS-UP: when it is full, the acoustics don't help conversation
  • HOURS: Tuesday–Sunday from 17:30–18:00 until 01:00–03:00 · closed Monday
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.8/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Bonnie & Clyde

3is Septemvriou 4

A small hideout for lovers of jazz, blues and rock. Every object on the walls has its own story, and the owners welcome you as if you were in their home. Handmade cocktails, a home-made white sangria with passion fruit and a truffle pizza if you are hungry. One of the few non-smoking bars, with good prices.

  • MUST-TRY: sangria with passion fruit
  • VIBE: smoke-free hideout for jazz and rock
  • HEADS-UP: closed Sunday, and on Monday it closes at 18:00
  • HOURS: Tuesday–Thursday 10:00–01:30 · Friday 10:00–02:30 · Saturday 19:00–03:00
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.7/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Vale Vale

Alexioupoleos 26 & Ipeirou

A beer hall with Northern European-style wooden décor, in the same spot since 2006. It has 10 taps and around 60 bottled labels, and the waiters know how to guide your choice. The evening starts with food from the grill and ends with a shot of mastiha on the house. Nobody smokes inside, and there are heaters outside.

  • MUST-TRY: ask the waiter for a draught beer you haven't tried before
  • VIBE: wooden Northern European-style beer hall
  • PRICE: €20–30 per person with food

Meze places / small tavernas

Alargino Rakadiko

M. Geroulanou 94

A bit of Naxos in the middle of Geroulanou. White tables, seafood and spirits, and a mood that feels like summer even in November. Prawns, shellfish, crab claws, octopus, fava and a prawn risotto you will remember. At the end, order the baked halva.

  • MUST-TRY: prawn risotto or crab salad
  • VIBE: island raki bar in the city
  • HEADS-UP: it gets very full; call ahead to be safe
  • PRICE: around €30 per person

  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.4/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Souxou Mouxou

Mar. Geroulanou 85

Few dishes, but carefully made, fresh and colourful. Sarikopita (coiled cheese pie) with xinomyzithra and thyme honey, giaourtlou meatballs with yoghurt, a Greek-style carbonara and a 700-gram tomahawk with chimichurri for meat lovers. The raki is excellent. Ideal for couples and small groups who want something more crafted than the classic tsipouro place.

  • MUST-TRY: sarikopita with thyme honey
  • VIBE: modern neighbourhood meze place
  • HEADS-UP: at weekends you need to book a table, and the music gets loud
  • HOURS: Tuesday–Saturday 19:00–00:00 · Sunday 13:00–18:00 · closed Monday
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.8/5 (Google, 10/2026)

mani Mani

Mar. Geroulanou 110

From the outside it looks like nothing. As soon as you step into the courtyard, you feel you have landed on an island in the middle of the southern suburbs. A taverna with cooking from the Mani and traditional meat dishes, where the suckling pig steals the show and the pork belly follows. Simple food without frills, good house wine and warm service.

  • MUST-TRY: suckling pig
  • VIBE: island courtyard in the suburbs
  • HEADS-UP: the special meats are a little more expensive
  • HOURS: daily 12:30–00:00
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.6/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Mezeklik

Thoukydidou 15, near the metro

A big, noisy meze place that fits large tables. It also has small plates so you can try lots of things. The seafood pasta "for two" easily feeds three, and the prawn risotto is just as good. Among the meat dishes, the burger patties stand out. Bread, water and dessert come on the house, and the good mood is guaranteed.

  • MUST-TRY: seafood pasta
  • VIBE: lively, for big groups
  • HOURS: Monday–Saturday 12:00–02:00 · Sunday 12:00–00:00
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.5/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Leonidas "To Diko Mas" (Our Place)

M. Geroulanou 130

The neighbourhood's old fish taverna, with regulars who feel at home. Charcoal-grilled octopus and squid, fresh fish, handmade dolmades and fish soup. The starters are its strong point.

  • MUST-TRY: charcoal-grilled octopus and squid
  • VIBE: old neighbourhood fish taverna
  • HEADS-UP: on public holidays it fills up and service is slow, the seafood is expensive and parking is street-only
  • PRICE: €20–30 per person
  • HOURS: Tuesday–Saturday from midday until 00:00 · Sunday 12:00–18:00 · closed Monday
  • PUBLIC RATING: 4.2/5 (Google, 10/2026)

Green space, sport and culture

Cine Argyroupoli

Leof. Kyprou 68

An open-air cinema with a view of Mount Hymettus, very good sound, a cool breeze and cold beer at the interval. During long films the chairs get tiring, so a cushion won't go to waste. Open in summer only.

Municipal Swimming Pool and "G. Koskinidis" Stadium

Tripoleos & Leof. Kyprou, about 1.1 km

An Olympic-size heated pool, open to non-residents too, with aqua aerobics. Next to it is the stadium, which you can enter freely to walk and run.

  • Aphrodite Park (Leof. Kyprou, about 1.5 km): a skate park, playground and fountain, open 08:00–22:30.
  • The Ellinikon: the Sports Park (287,000 m²) is opening to the public in stages, with courts and an open running track. The Metropolitan Park is planned at 2,000 stremmata (200 hectares), with more than 32,000 trees.
  • Hymettus: the town is built at the foot of the mountain. It has more than 150 km of waymarked trails.

Culture

The Municipal Theatre (Olympias 5) is home to the municipality's theatre group, award-winning at the Panhellenic Theatre Games. The church of Agia Varvara, the refugees' first project, is a reminder of the town's Pontic roots.
