Where Pylaros is

Pylaros is in the north-central part of Kefalonia, a valley between two mountains that runs from Myrtos on the west coast to the Bay of Agia Efimia on the east. About 1,400 people lived here at the 2021 census, spread across 24 villages. This page covers Agia Efimia and the villages of the valley, including Makriotika, Divarata, Potamianata, Anomeria, Karousata and Feredinata, and the figures above count all of them. Since 2019 Pylaros has been a municipal unit of the Municipality of Sami.

Two coasts in one small area

On the east side, Agia Efimia is a small harbour village with tavernas, shops and a traditional bakery, and a base for sailing flotillas. Sami, the island's main port for ferries to the mainland and Ithaca, is about 9 km to the south. Melissani Lake is about 7 km away.

On the west side, a steep 2 km road with hairpin bends drops from Divarata to Myrtos, the long arc of white pebbles that has been voted the best beach in Greece many times.

Distances

Argostoli is about 30 km away, around 45 minutes by car, and the airport about 40 km, just under an hour. That is further than from the south of the island, which matters if you plan to fly in and out often.

What to check on a plot in Pylaros

Slopes and access. Much of the valley sits on hillsides. On a sloping plot, ask your engineer how much of it can actually be built on and whether the access road is a recognised public road.

Streams. The Xeropotamos river runs through the valley, and smaller streams cross it. If a watercourse runs along or through the plot, building close to it is restricted, so ask your engineer to check before you pay a deposit.

The 1953 earthquake. Many of the old buildings in Agia Efimia were destroyed in 1953. On a plot with an old house or ruin, ask your engineer what can legally be rebuilt and to what size.
