Where Paliki is

Paliki is the peninsula that forms the western end of Kefalonia, across the Gulf of Argostoli from the capital. Its main town, Lixouri, is the second largest on the island, with about 3,500 people at the 2021 census, and about 7,000 people live on the peninsula as a whole. The ferry across the gulf

Lixouri faces Argostoli across the gulf. A car ferry crosses in about 20–25 minutes, every hour, or every half hour in peak season. The alternative is the road around the gulf, which is much longer. If you will need the capital's services often, check the ferry times against your routine before you choose a plot.

A west-facing coast

The peninsula's beaches face west and south-west, among them Petani and Xi, known for its red sand and clay cliffs. Hills of up to about 500 m cover the west and north of the peninsula, and the villages there are small and quiet.

What to check on a plot in Paliki

Ground conditions. The two strong earthquakes of January and February 2014 hit Paliki harder than the rest of the island. Liquefied ground cracked the port of Lixouri, and rockfalls and landslides closed roads. On a coastal or low-lying plot, or one near a slope or the clay cliffs, ask your engineer whether a geotechnical survey is needed before you commit.

Access. If a plot is reached by a private or unpaved track, ask whether it fronts a recognised public road. That matters both for daily use and for whether you can build at all.
