Where Erissos is
Erissos (also spelled Erisos) is the northern tip of Kefalonia. About 1,600 people lived here at the 2021 census. It is best known for its two small harbours, Fiskardo on the north-east coast and Assos on the west. This page covers Fiskardo, Assos and the villages of the area, including Antipata, Matsoukata and Touliata, and the figures above count all of them. Since 2019 Erissos has been a municipal unit of the Municipality of Sami.
The village the earthquake spared
The 1953 earthquake destroyed almost every settlement on Kefalonia, but Fiskardo escaped and kept its original architecture. Fiskardo and the dense forest around it have been declared areas of great natural beauty and are protected under Greek law. Around the harbour, the coast breaks into small pebble coves, and ferries run to Frikes on Ithaca and to Lefkada.
Assos sits on the west coast below a large Venetian castle, built between 1593 and 1595 on the peninsula next to the village.
Distances
Fiskardo is about 32 km north of Argostoli, 24 km from Sami and about 61 km from the airport, the furthest of any area on the island from the airport. Assos is about 36 km north of Argostoli. If you plan to fly in and out often, or need the hospital and services in Argostoli regularly, weigh the drive before you choose a plot here.
What to check on a plot in Erissos
Protected-area rules. Around Fiskardo, building is subject to the rules of the protected area, which can limit the size, height and appearance of a house. Ask your engineer which rules apply to the plot before you pay a deposit.
Forest. Much of the area is wooded. Check the forest map, which for Kefalonia has been ratified and can be viewed online on the Hellenic Cadastre's site, and confirm with your engineer that the plot is not classified as forest.
Access. On a sloping plot, ask whether it fronts a recognised public road and how much of it can actually be built on.
